Volcano Mahameru Outburst in the Southeast Asian nation Prompts Evacuations
Indonesia's Mount Semeru, the highest peak on the island of Java, has erupted, blanketing multiple communities with volcanic ash, prompting evacuations and causing officials to elevate the alert to the highest level.
The mountain in East Java province released searing clouds of fiery ash and a combination of stone, molten rock, and gases that moved up to 4 miles down its sides several times from midday to evening, while a thick column of fiery clouds rose 1.2 miles into the air, as stated by the nation's geological authority.
The eruptions that unfolded throughout the day compelled officials to increase the mountain's warning status twice, from the level three to the top level, the authority reported. No deaths or injuries have been reported.
More than 300 residents in the three villages most at risk in the area of Lumajang region were relocated to official safe havens, as mentioned by a spokesperson for the national emergency management body.
He said that heightened volcanic movements of the mountain on Wednesday afternoon led officials to expand the danger zone to 5 miles from the summit. People were urged to keep away from an area along the Besuk Kobokan River, which is the route of the molten rock stream, as searing gas flowed down Semeru’s slopes.
Videos on social media showed a dense cloud of volcanic dust moving through a forested valley to a waterway beneath a bridge. Residents, some with faces covered with ash and water, fled to makeshift refuges or departed for other safe areas.
Local media reported that authorities were struggling to rescue about 178 individuals trapped on the 3,676-metre mountain at the Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post. The party comprised 137 climbers, 15 porters, seven guides and six travel representatives, according to an official with the national park.
“They remain secure at Ranu Kumbolo monitoring post,” an official said in a recorded message. He noted the post was located 4.5km from the summit on the northern slope of the volcano, which is outside the trajectory of the fiery cloud movement that was observed traveling to the south-southeast. Inclement conditions and precipitation forced the team to remain overnight there, he added.
The volcano, also called Mahameru, has erupted numerous times in the past 200 years. Still, as is the situation with many of the 129 live volcanoes in the archipelago, tens of thousands of residents still to reside on its fertile slopes.
Semeru’s previous significant explosion was in late 2021, when 51 individuals were lost their lives and several hundred more were burned and settlements were submerged in thick mud. The eruption forced the evacuation of more than 10,000 people from their houses.
The country, an archipelago of over 280 million people, is located along the Pacific “ring of fire”, a horseshoe-shaped series of tectonic boundaries, and is prone to seismic events and volcanism.
