UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller Merging Survival Horror with Social Deduction Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several fascinating future games, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a unique game where a young woman containing multiple human souls within her must escape from a labyrinth of the psyche," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Within her reside four distinct souls, all possessing their own anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a creepy hospital, though other scenes depict the main character navigating a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Personal Horror
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can activate a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are specific to every individual."
The central gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will switch involuntarily as you play. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the protagonist one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player experiences.
Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Choice
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the waiting room have enormous flowers growing from their necks are. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the souls claims that the body belongs to them," notes a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players believes a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. However, since each soul can deceive or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The last one remaining could be a fraud. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
