Thomas Tuchel Seeks Bellingham's Aggression Provided England's Ace Leaves Egotism at the Door.

One snub was enough. Another and it could have seemed vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, who is much too clever not to understand that securing World Cup glory demands help from Jude Bellingham, even if it is also up to the player to blend into the game plans and team pecking order required with the national team now that he is back in the manager's supportive environment.

Tuchel seeks the player's competitive fire, his fire, but it is a matter of channeling it constructively. Individual quality counts but England understand from past setbacks that there is consequences when fame prevails. Still, a point has been made.

Bellingham was given food for thought after his omission of last month’s squad. He observed the national side secure their spot at the upcoming World Cup in his absence. He saw the young talent perform brilliantly as a high-pressing No 10. He heard Tuchel talk about appreciating the team's dynamism and principles. Inevitably, Bellingham has reacted in winning fashion, netting important strikes for Real Madrid against their rivals and the Italian side. He had to be picked; another omission would have made his squad place hanging by a thread.

The hope is that the manager will have a midfielder concentrating on intimidating opponents rather than teammates. Ultimately, on a pure footballing level, there is little benefit to creating tension with a top talent in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time out of the team has shown him that representing the national team is a precious, precarious thing. Tuchel, on his side, can now offer support around the 22-year-old after proving that he is unafraid to take tough decisions.

“No issue exists regarding him, and no concern with the character,” Tuchel commented. “Bellingham displays a competitive streak. You need a sharp mentality to succeed at the top that he reached. We all must support him and establish an environment which he can [have] this edge against rivals and towards the goals we are working towards as a team.”

The star took up the spotlight at the team news conference for the upcoming dead-rubber qualifiers versus Serbia and the other. Any other news? Indeed, how about Phil Foden? This is a further gifted playmaker requiring coaching. Foden has been absent for England since March and has struggled to reach his best this year but Tuchel was impressed by the player after his display in the Champions League match versus Borussia Dortmund recently.

The issue, though, is how to use the attacking talents at available. Rogers and Eberechi Eze deserve their spots and there will be a strong case to select Cole Palmer once he is fit after a fitness issue. Would taking several attacking midfielders to the World Cup be excessive? Gareth Southgate never found the right blend at the European Championship. He made concessions by squeezing both stars into the team, cramping Harry Kane’s influence in the process.

It seems unlikely Tuchel making the same mistake if it hurts the team harmony. There is room for a single playmaker, with speedy wingers on the flanks. Clear roles helps. Bellingham is in as a central attacker. The new call-up, called up for the first time, is a central midfielder and the returning Wharton will compete with another player as a No 6. There will also be no wide role for the City star, who must play through the middle. Tuchel wants him near Kane. “It is illogical to tell Foden: ‘We want you in the team but no spot exists in your preferred role, can you play the left side? Or the right wing?” he said. “Phil will play in the advanced midfield role, in the middle of the pitch. I have this idea regarding him for a long time. In my view it suits him best.”

Tuchel conceded there are times when the player has seemed out of sorts in an England shirt. “One senses as if, ‘Is he truly happy? And someone of his caliber who has such natural delight to play football, then obviously something is not right, whether it's the position, the environment, it's unclear.

“In my opinion he is additionally so used to representing his club in a particular setup, with a clear task. Believe he benefits greatly from clarity. Where do you want me to be? In which positions should I turn? When should I to accelerate the match? What are my to defend?

The manager talked about Bellingham bursting through for tap-ins and Foden drilling in strikes from 18 yards. He added he has a longlist of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is rewarded for his excellent performances for Manchester City at defense. Intrigue is high.

The omission of Ollie Watkins means there is no direct replacement for the captain in the selection. Interestingly, he suggested using the playmaker as a deep-lying striker versus one opponent or the other. Other options, the United forward, the midfielder and the winger are alternatives should he be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is a moment for trying new things.

Meanwhile, it is also a moment to develop the understanding with Bellingham flowing. It's surprising that one must look back to the latter setting up the captain to net in a friendly win versus Scotland in September 2023 to discover the sole instance in 35 games for the national team when the pair linked up for a score. Tuchel will be aware that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball once during England’s draws with Denmark and Slovenia at the Euros. The connection is missing.

“This is where at some point it becomes the duty of the individuals,” he said. He is not afraid to speak frankly. There is still a sense of Bellingham being on trial. He may not be guaranteed to start versus the upcoming opponents. The manager desires Bellingham committed but he will be observing him closely. Leave the ego at the door. Doing so could turn a very strong England team into an even better one.
