The network's Premier New Show of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block debuted a new season of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the channel introduced a fresh animated series with a markedly softer feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a laid-back talk show. At a time often marked by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness struck a chord and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The series follows three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for seasons to come."
A President's Endorsement
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat appeal.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a comforting antidote" to other adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about following this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to move the comedy genre beyond its prevailing sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we must laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to enjoy the warm glow of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
