The Mighty Nein's Introductory Sequence Selected the Wrong Popular RPG Show Song

The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series by Critical Role, unveiled a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite group of outcasts, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching personal histories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.

All in all, the intro appears stunning. But I couldn't help feeling that something was lost in the song choice.

The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition created by artist the talented musician. This piece from the official score of the same name, the second release put out by the production company's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a wonderful sentimental option, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will appreciate its inclusion.

Personally, The Mighty Nein's opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that was part of the second campaign's actual-play adventure. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it improved further when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't seen the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my phone. It's a song that excites you before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.

The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive piece of music, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.

Naturally, the creators has already said that the animated show will have a few changes and differences from the original live sessions. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.

This animated adventure will be released on Prime Video from Nov. 19. If you can't wait until then, or want a head start to get to know the characters of the second series, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and the video site.
