Past and Present Images Reveal Ice Masses Vanishing Right in Front of Us
Back when Matthias Huss first visited Switzerland's Rhône Glacier 35 years ago, the ice was only a short walk from where his family used to park their automobile.
"The first time I walked on the glacier... I felt an extraordinary emotion of eternity," explains Dr. Huss.
In the present day, it takes thirty minutes starting from that very location and the landscape looks completely altered.
"Whenever I revisit, I reflect on how it used to be," recalls the glaciologist, presently the head of Switzerland's glacier observation program, "how the glacier looked in my younger years."
Worldwide Ice Reduction
There are similar stories concerning various glaciers across the globe, since these icy formations are diminishing - quickly.
During 2024, ice masses beyond the massive ice caps in Greenland and Antarctica shed 450 gigatons of glacial mass, as reported by a recent World Meteorological Organization report.
This equals an ice cube 7 kilometers high, 7 kilometers across and 4.3 miles thick - enough water to completely fill 180 million Olympic swimming pools.
"Ice masses are disappearing everywhere in the world," states Prof Ben Marzeion at the Geographical Institute from the University of Bremen. "They exist in an environment that is very hostile to them now as a result of planetary heating."
Swiss Ice Masses Hit Hard
Alpine ice masses have experienced notable decline, dropping one-fourth of their ice over the past decade, data from the monitoring network indicated in the latest report.
"It's truly challenging to comprehend the scale of this melting," clarifies the glaciologist.
Yet images - from space and the ground - tell their own story.
Satellite images show the manner in which this glacier has altered from 1990 onward, when the scientist initially saw it. Near the glacier's terminus has formed a water body in what was once frozen territory.
Speeding Up Glacial Decline
Up until not long ago, glaciologists in the Alps typically regarded two percent glacial loss over one year to be "extreme".
Subsequently, during 2022 blew that idea out of the water, with nearly 6% of the country's remaining glaciers lost in a single year.
That has been followed by considerable decline during 2023, 2024 and currently in 2025.
Dr. Regine Hock, glaciology professor from Oslo University, has regularly visited the Alps since the 1970s.
The transformations during her career are "truly astonishing", she states, however "current observations show dramatic alterations within a few years."
Individual Glacier Cases
This particular glacier, situated in Switzerland's northeast, was roughly in balance until the late 20th Century - receiving similar amounts of frozen precipitation from winter precipitation as it dissipated through melting.
But this century, it's melted rapidly.
Concerning various minor glaciers, including the Pizol glacier in Switzerland's northeastern Alps, it's been too much.
"This is one of the glaciers that I studied, and now it's completely gone," explains Matthias Huss. "Undoubtedly, this brings sorrow."
Long-term Perspective
Pictures permit us to look even further back in time.
The Gries Glacier, within southern Swiss territory close to the Italian frontier, has receded approximately nearly 1.4 miles over the last hundred years. The former glacier terminus location has become a substantial glacial lake.
In south-east Switzerland, the Pers Glacier previously supplied the more extensive Morteratsch glacier, that descends into the valley. Currently, they don't connect anymore.
Additionally, the most extensive glacier in the Alps, Great Aletsch Glacier, has receded by about 2.3km (1.4 miles) through the last three-quarters of a century. In locations previously frozen, there are now trees.
Natural vs Human Causes
Glaciers have grown and shrunk naturally for millions of years, of course.
Throughout freezing episodes during the 1600s, 1700s and 1800s - associated with the Little Ice Age - glaciers commonly grew.
In this era, numerous were thought to be bewitched according to Alpine mythological traditions, their growth associated with supernatural influences as they posed risks to communities and crops.
Accounts are recorded of residents summoning clergy to interact with ice mass entities and persuade them to retreat uphill.
Modern Global Warming
Glacial withdrawal became extensive throughout the Alpine region around the mid-19th century, although specific dates differed from place to place.
That coincided with rising industrialisation, during hydrocarbon consumption, primarily coal, started warming our planet, however, challenging to distinguish natural and human causes during those earlier decades.
Where there is no real doubt pertains to the dramatically accelerated melting over the last four decades don't result from natural processes.
Absent anthropogenic climate change - through fossil fuel combustion and emitting substantial quantities of CO2 – ice masses would likely to be roughly stable.
"We can only explain it if we take into account CO2 emissions," states Professor Marzeion.
Upcoming Predictions
Even more concerning is that these large, flowing bodies of ice may require many years to fully adjust to fast-increasing temperatures.
This indicates that, even if global temperatures stabilised tomorrow, glacial decline would persist.
