New York City Mayor Eric Adams to Endorse Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayor's Election

NYC's current mayor Eric Adams has announced his intention to support former Governor Cuomo in the upcoming election for mayor, even after an extended period of disagreements between the two Democratic figures.

A Surprising Reversal After Previous Accusations

Just last month, Adams had lashed out at Cuomo, describing him as a “deceptive figure and a untruthful person” and alleging of having “a history of pushing Black candidates out of races.” Yet, in a recent statement, Mayor Adams changed his position, stating he now intends to appear with Cuomo in areas where he maintains strong support.

“I think that it is imperative to energize the communities of color that have experienced gentrification on how critical this race is,” Adams stated.

He added, “They have watched their rents increase in terms of gentrification and they have been disregarded in those areas, and I plan to visit to those neighborhoods and talk directly with organizers and groups and I will appear with the governor in those neighborhoods and get them involved.”

Election Landscape and Recent Events

The mayoral contest has so far been dominated by the competition between Cuomo and democratic socialist his main rival, whose rise in the polls has attracted attention worldwide and symbolized hopes for a revitalized leftwing of the Democrats.

During a latest mayoral debate, both Mamdani and GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa declared they would reject the mayor's support if extended.

Months ago, the mayor had begun his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after facing legal accusations which were later thrown out in exchange for his assistance with federal immigration raids across New York City.

During a unrelated press conference on the same day, Adams responded to journalists asking about the endorsement plan by stating, “I’ll be with Andrew later today.”

The announcement followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen attending a game side-by-side at the the NBA team's season opener at the famous arena, which occurred immediately following a contentious candidate debate.
