Miami Heat & Portland Trail Blazers Secure Initial Wins Following Player Detentions
The Miami Heat recorded eighty-six opening half scores against the Memphis Grizzlies
Miami Heat secured a overwhelming 146-114 win against the Memphis Grizzlies in their initial basketball game since guard Terry Rozier was detained for alleged unlawful gambling.
Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was also detained in connection with a sweeping federal probe into illegal gambling. Both men contest the allegations.
However, the Miami team were focused as they put up eighty-six opening half points to be ahead of the Grizzlies by thirty-nine at halftime, the largest half-time advantage in the team's 37-year existence.
Adebayo top-scored with 24 scores and later said Rozier had the team's full backing.
"We stand behind him. Complete backing," Adebayo said. "We are with him all the way. That's our brother at the end of the day."
Miami head coach Spoelstra added: "Rozier is somebody who is important to all of us. He has made a real positive impact on our team.
"We send our thoughts and our care for him as he faces this."
Portland also secured their initial match since the detentions, with Brazilian Tiago Splitter taking over as interim coach in Chauncey's non-attendance and guiding the team to a decisive 139 to 119 win over the Golden State Warriors.
"We all had positive times with Billups and how he coached," Splitter remarked. "We're thinking of him and his family but our focus is on the game."
League Commissioner Adam Silver 'Upset' over Recent Events
Addressing the arrests for the first time, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said he was "very upset" by the events of the recent days.
"There's nothing more important to the league and supporters than the integrity of the game," he informed a broadcaster. "And so I felt uneasy. It was disturbing."
The commissioner further mentioned an league probe into the player's actions in March 2023, when there was "unusual wagering" in a match he participated for the Hornets against the Pelicans, found nothing untoward.
"We were informed by the regulators and the gambling firms," he added.
"We investigated the matter and were very transparent regarding it. And while there was that aberrational betting, we, frankly, couldn't find anything.
"Federal authorities has legal authority... [it] can impose penalties, can do all kinds of things that the NBA can't do.
"So, we've been cooperating from that point. Naturally, what they announced yesterday was an charge.
"Moreover two and a half years after, he still hasn't been convicted of anything, in fairness to Terry.
"Obviously, it appears unfavorable, but he's been put on administrative leave, and so it is a balance in this case between upholding rights and conducting an inquiry."
