The gravest possible consequences of the climate crisis for the UK have been outlined by researchers, ranging from a scorching 4C jump in mean temperatures to a 6.5-foot increase in ocean levels. An alternative projection predicts a plunge of 6C in temperature following the shutdown of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would profoundly upset agriculture and energy demand.
Credible Outcomes, Not Forecasts
These effects, certain ones are associated with climate tipping points, are seen as improbable but possible. The scientists explained that these scenarios addressed a shortfall in risk assessment that had rendered the UK unprepared for catastrophic possibilities.
"The climate extremes we have detailed are not forecasts, but they are possible," commented Nigel Arnell who led the analysis. "The nation has been planning without the frameworks to plan for extreme possibilities. We've now supplied decision-makers what they need to get ready for environmental results they pray never occur, but must not overlook."
A Range of Extreme Weather Projections
Another collection of worst-case scenarios sets out the projected severity of severe conditions between now and the close of the 2100s. These indicate that temperatures could skyrocket in particular seasons by up to 6C above historical levels, while precipitation could be three times standard measurements.
The probability of the catastrophic events occurring remains uncertain due to a lack of certainty about what action will be enacted to tackle global heating and how the Earth's systems will react. This analysis was likened to national security risk assessments or resilience checks for financial systems.
Key Scenario Elements
- Four-Degree Warming: Worldwide averages exceeding 4C by 2100 could transpire if emissions cuts fails or if vicious cycles such as the tropical forests becoming a net carbon source release its huge repository of carbon. This would cause intense and enduring heatwaves and dry spells hitting the UK in summer.
- AMOC Shutdown: A critical sea current, the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (Amoc), is slowing down and losing stability due to climate change. A full shutdown starting around 2030 would lead to a 6C cooling in the UK. "Agriculture would be severely challenged and water supplies would be fundamentally reshaped," noted Arnell.
- Accelerated Coastal Flooding: A surge of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could take place if ice sheets in the polar regions collapse rapidly, flooding coastal cities and towns. In contrast to the other scenarios, this threat is already known by infrastructure experts.
- Clean Air Warming: Global averages could also be increased by about 0.75C if airborne particulates is sharply cut. This counterintuitive effect occurs because pollution particles from burning coal reflect sunlight from reaching the ground.
Building Resilience Against the Unthinkable
The severe models could be used to inform the building of long-term infrastructure, for example new towns, energy plants and flood defences. Understanding these future hazards could also accelerate the transition to reduce fossil fuel emissions.
The research created the extreme models using a mix of real-world events, computer simulations and established principles. The possibilities do not take into account international cascading effects like the agricultural collapse and resource wars.
This work was requested as part of a national climate resilience programme. Previous assessments have cautioned that too little consideration was being given to catastrophic yet improbable risks.
The government's climate advisors has recommended that the UK needs to "become resilient to moderate heating" and evaluate the dangers for severe warming. Past policy documents have been labeled being "insufficient" by some observers.
An official statement noted: "Global warming is at the center of the country's focus, both adapting for the future and becoming a low-carbon economy. It is vital that the UK is prepared for the impacts."
