Eurovision Used to Be a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Strategic Method to Sanitize Conflict.

A recent acronym surfaced a couple of months following the onset of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it signifies “Injured child with no living relatives”. This designation is specific to Gaza, as stated by health professionals such as paediatricians. Typically, it is rare for medical staff to care for a young patient who has been bereaved of their complete family. Yet, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been obliterated and the number of young amputees exceeds that of anywhere else in the world. Nothing normal about numerous doctors returning from a sea of ruins with reports of children being systematically aimed at.

A Living Nightmare In Spite Of a Reported Truce

Gaza remains hell on earth. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and groups like Amnesty International assert that genocidal acts are continuing. Officials has denied these accusations, just as it denies all charges it is accused of. Meanwhile, while traumatised orphans are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from continuing with its stated mission of “unity and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to extend a welcoming platform for Israel, even though at least four European countries have now withdrawn in objection. And this, we are told, is what global togetherness manifests as.

Eurovision, of course banned Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “grave situation in Ukraine”. However, the situation in Gaza appears to be entirely distinct.

Contradictory Principles

Disregard the reality that Israel was criticized for questionable voting tactics last year in what appears to have been an bid to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a young child was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and forced displacement in the West Bank have surged. Disregard the condition that global media are still prevented from unfettered access in Gaza. This entire context, it would seem, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s much-touted ethos of unity.

The Show Goes On Against a Backdrop of Profound Human Cost

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the average life expectancy of someone in Gaza now. The event will proceed, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the whimsical pleasure it was formerly known for. A contest that was originally built on togetherness has now become a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
