The child of previous South African President Jacob Zuma has denied all charges to terror charges at the beginning of her trial in the harbor city of the city of Durban.

Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being tried over remarks she made on social media four years ago during deadly demonstrations in South Africa that followed the detention of her father.

A period of disorder in several parts of the country in July 2021, including theft and fire-setting, resulted in at least 300 dead and caused damage worth an projected 2.8 billion dollars (£2.2 billion).

Zuma-Sambudla has been charged of inciting this unrest and faces allegations of encouragement to commit terrorism and public violence.

Context of the Legal Matter

The demonstrations were focused in the areas of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal and came after the former president's apprehension for disobeying a judicial ruling to give evidence at an inquiry into accusations of impropriety while he was serving as president.

The defendant has consistently denied the charges against her, with her attorney previously labelling the government's evidence as insufficient.

She has also repeatedly said the allegations against her were an attempt to resolve political grievances with her parent after he established his own political party and ran against the ruling party.

Endorsement and Legal Defense

This was echoed by the Zuma foundation, which claimed the proceedings was an "abuse of power" and a "organized effort" of "political and familial targeting" against the former president and his relatives.

A handful of backers from her political organization, her party, appeared outside the provincial high court, while her parent and other organization officials participated in the proceedings inside.

The defendant's representatives has argued that the testimony presented by the state is unconvincing and lacks concrete proof for a criminal finding.

Central Elements of the Legal Proceedings

  • Digital statements from 2019 form the foundation of the government's evidence
  • Fatal unrest in July 2021 resulted in significant fatalities and monetary destruction
  • The individual on trial confronts multiple charges of encouragement to public disorder
  • Legal hearings are anticipated to carry on for several days

The trial continues as all parties present their evidence before the judicial authority in what is projected to be a closely watched legal battle with significant political ramifications for South Africa.
