‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: The striker’s road from rehabilitation to success with Athletic Bilbao

Thehe initial occasion the Athletic striker played in England, an teenage playing for the reserve team against Borussia Mönchengladbach Under-23s at the English ground in September 2015, he scored. During his subsequent match he took the field in the country, against the Black Cats weeks after, he netted. His third outing, against the Citizens soon after, indeed, he scored again. Upon his comeback to the northwest to play against the Red Devils at Leigh Sports Village in 2017, he did it once more. An excellent finish, also. “Truly,” he says, “it’s one of the best goals in my career.” Therefore the team did what they had to do: they took him off.

“I was furious,” the Athletic striker says, before breaking into laughter. “Probably there’s a recording. We traveled to face United and I was pretty good. They kept me out of the latter period: my contract wasn’t finalized deal, I was scoring goals, speculation was rife, you know how it is. I don’t know about Newcastle being interested, but I recall seeing about the Red Devils, the typical thing. It’s unclear if it was accurate, but even if they had called, I’d have chosen to stay at the club. It’s a privilege.”

Real Sociedad ease tension with bizarre win in unique Basque clash

At the facility, Bilbao, the early training is about to start; post-session, the short journey to the airport and another flight to Britain, on this occasion to take on the Magpies in the European elite competition on midweek. Mentioning that phrase lights him up. It’s turning out to be a difficult season for Athletic, partly because of the requirements of their participation. Beaten in added time in the weekend clash, they have won only one of their last eight matches and fallen to the Gunners and the German side in Europe. However, consider the broader view, the major occasions he’s experienced and upcoming events, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation from him.

In the the period since he had rejoined the team, Guruzeta has been a Europa League semi-finalist, stopped at the gates a domestic final by Manchester United, and has boarded a decades-old barge through the waterway flanked by countless supporters after winning the Copa del Rey, the team’s initial silverware in four decades. He’s now the club’s leading marksman in the UCL, where they are distinctive and returning after absence in a long period. “This was beyond my dreams,” he says.

Guruzeta thought it difficult enough just to make the first team and his assessment was correct. The son of the former Real Sociedad player Xabi Guruzeta and a regular attendee at the club that are now his rivals, the forward is a product of Antiguoko, the Donostiarra team that nurtured the Arsenal manager, the former star and Andoni Iraola. He signed for Athletic at his teens but after his top-level debut in the 2018 season, he suffered a ACL injury, dropped, a relegation and a recall before he could earn his place, coming back aged 26 to live the best days of the club’s history.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta gets ready to play Newcastle in the European competition.

“You go into the academy not expecting to reach the senior squad but every phase you advance through you’re still there and you can notice the proximity. You get there but … departure is necessary.” He had limited game time in half a dozen appearances between his bow and that period. “Then I was sent to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches there and I tear my cruciate.

“A massive setback but I look back on it as something positive because it shifted the outlook. Healing from a serious ailment is hard, but it helps. You cultivate routines you didn’t have. Previously I was casual, but I would go to training and then return home, typical youth behavior. At Lezama, facilities are comprehensive, so do everything. Work, precaution. Get in the gym. Should your hips be uneven, correct it. If your ankles are a 10, improve it more. All the minor details: execute them.

“Among professionals you’re going to face physical challenges who have been in battles countless occasions. They’re so strong. Reviewing old images: I had slender legs. Thus incidents occur. Current photos and the improvement is clear. Injury made me see that. Sessions end, but there’s more to do. Teammates are set, really ready; no exceptions.”

You also have to play. Guruzeta departed upset in the pandemic season, aged 23, joining the second tier. At Sabadell in that season, he scored three times in forty appearances. During his Amorebieta stint in the second half of 2021-22, the scoring picked up. “It’s a common path: transfers, releases. If you turn it round, effort, faith, and should the time come they need someone for your role, a return could happen. Readiness is vital. Upon the recall, it was a dream come true. To then win the Copa del Rey, play in Europe, and reach the Champions League … pfff.”

Little surprise he states savor the moment. Particularly after last year which, on occasions, was focused on persistence. After being leading scorer with a high tally, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
